Valdano happy away from Real Madrid

Former Argentina international Jorge Valdano has expressed a certain sense of relief at not being part of Real Madrid anymore.

The 56-year-old was sacked as general director in May as a result of changes to the club's organisational structure which strengthened coach Jose Mourinho's position at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Valdano had developed a fractious relationship with Mourinho since the Portuguese's arrival at Madrid, and while he admits that all was not well at the club, he does not exclude the possibility of returning to Los Blancos.

"Being at Madrid has something of fulfilment in it, but it has nothing to do with happiness," Valdano told El Colombiano.

"It is healthy for me to be out of the club every once in a while. I have entered and left Madrid five times in my life: player, youth coach, senior coach, sporting director and general director.

"I do not rule out a return, but that is something I am not aspiring to."

Valdano admitted that he failed to see eye-to-eye with Mourinho, adding: "His sensitivity is opposite to mine and that is more than enough for us not to be able to get along."

Questioned about his favourite coach, Valdano named Barcelona's Pep Guardiola, whom he described as a role model for everyone both on and off the field.

"Guardiola believes in football as a territory where greatness is possible," Valdano said.

"He also never cheats, is always brave and strips football of all its miseries."
